Peter Palgen studied mechanical engineering at the RWTH University in Aachen, followed by physics at Cologne University, where he graduated in 1962. He then vvent on to obtain his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) at Cologne University. Both his final-year project as an undergraduate and his dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf concerned the deformation of steels.

In 1969, alter qualifying as a patent attorney, Dr. Palgen entered into a partnership with his former instructor, patent attorney Walter Kuborn. After the latter's death in 1987 he continued the business on his own before joining forces in 1990 with Dr. Horst Schumacher.

They established a partnership with offices in Düsseldorf and Essen. In 2002, shortly before the merger that formed Grosse, Bockhorni & Schumacher he moved with the Düsseldorf office to Essen. Since then, the Ruhr area business has been centralized in Essen and is continued under GROSSE • SCHUMACHER • KNAUER • von HIRSCHHAUSEN as it is today.
